Pizza Festival Closing Event, Alexandria

There are some who eat fast food pizzas exclusively. And then there are the purists who scoff at the idea of mass produced 6+ ingredient pizzas. Me? I fall in the between. The gourmand in me wants pizza where you can taste each individual ingredient. Paper thin wood fire crust, all beautifully smoky and blistered. A deep and rich tomato pasata. Premium mozarella. But then there's the other part of me who'll just finish 2 and a half + whole large Dominoes on a good night without a second thought. I mean, seriously, who doesn't love a good large 5 dollar deep pan with the lot on a long boozy Tuesday night.

A mostly picture post today. The other night (first day of uni) we were out to the pizza festival's first ever closing event held in Salt Meats Cheese just across from Grounds of Alexandria.

It featured all you can eat pizza goodness from 13 different Sydney and Melbourne pizzerias as well as plenty of booze, a live DJ, nutella, mozarella balls and salami. The Sydney and Melbourne Pizza Festival is the recent brainchild of Matteo Rubettino; a seasoned food journalist and events coordinator wanting to share some of the more 'proper' pizzas that haven't been at the forefront of pizza love before.

The festival has been going on for a solid month or so, first in Melbourne and now in Sydney where pizzerias like Lucio's and Pizza Mario and Gigi have been offering specials like 3 different pizzerias for 50 dollars or a pizza and beer for 20.

Never have I seen so many Italians in my life! The air was thick with the language. Don't mistake this for a xenophobic over reaction cause it's not even remotely close. I think it's brilliant and it serves as a validation of the event; if it's good enough for Italian's it's certainly good enough for me. There's a lot going on, from the intense foozeball match going on in the centre, pizza making, mozerella ball making and the live Dj surrounded by rolls of salami.

La stella latticini were out in the centre banging out giant rounds of mozerella. These little stretchy, slightly salty and sweet balls of delight were just brilliant. Sadly no cutlery was provided so we went all caveman.

You get to try all these types of pizzas and it's hard to pick a favourite. Flavours are generally spot on and very delicious although they can be a tad over seasoned  Consistency issues are all over the place, some have a beautiful crust, others have theirs all soggy where one attempt to pick up a slice results in all your ingredients falling off.

Quite proud if I say so my self. The tickets were 25 dollars but I think I regained back that value in the first hour or so and the proceeded to double it in amount of pizzas. I still retained my sense of taste surprisingly. Still... could have finished more if D didn't drag me away!

At the beginning, there were heaps of people, so much so that it was nearly impossible to walk around. As it started to near 8:30 people started to head off but events kept rolling on throughout the night. It probably may be a good idea, in future events, to find a bigger area with plenty of seats. Besides that, a pretty much bang-on enjoyable night.

No, we aren't the most amazing gastronomes or chefs. Heck, half our team doesn't even know how to cook... well. However, what we really love is eating. And lots of it. We enjoy that occasional freebie, filling up that craving for a midnight snack and finding a 20 in our pockets that we thought we never had, and using that as an excuse to go out eating. As we battle the ongoing war on uni student poverty, we'll bring you the most swoon worthy recounts of our latest foodie adventures.
